‘Checkmate’ is full of plenty of gravelly mispronounced lyrics, simple percussion, guitar shredding and fist shaking for the moshing inclined. The sound is playful and upbeat while remaining firmly in punk-rock territory, but also provides a few surprises – like a take on ‘Ring of Fire’ (which is certainly something special). For fans of good-old-fashioned upbeat punk-rock, this is a fairly wholesome offering worth checking out.
