For folks who’ve just moved into a new place, gathering up family and friends for a house warming party can sometimes be an afterthought. Instead of just forgetting about it, when moving into our current house, I took the time to make a lovely logotype for it, then forget about it.

I’d also like to think that if they ever made a horror movie about global warming, this is what the title-card would look like.

A modern, fast paced, quick witted and quite campy take on the Sherlock Holmes stories you’re probably tired of hearing. Robert Downey Jr. plays a meandering, neurotic Holmes on the verge of alcoholism, and manages to create quite a dynamic with his onscreen counterpart, Watson (Jude Law).

While some folks are writing this movie off, saying it’s a disgrace to see Holmes portrayed the way he is in director Guy Ritchie’s take on the tales – I went in expecting something more along the lines of a Guy Ritchie movie, and I wasn’t disappointed. While the story seemed a little thin, and some of the characters could have used a little more ‘colouring in’, the pacing and action make this movie very memorable. The typical Ritchie charm is there, with a number of comical fight scenes and double/triple crossings, and Downey is playing basically the same character he always does, just in a different century: there’s not much in this movie to dissapoint the masses, which is probably why it’s clocking fairly decent earnings at the box office, currently second only to James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ (which in fairness is now the <del>4th</del> 2nd highest grossing film of all time – something that doesn’t bode well for any other movies released at around the same time).

This is a certainly a solid film and with a promised sequel following the same story arc, it’s all set to be the start of something quite special, especially for fans of Ritchie (which most definitely includes me). Well worth the price of admission.

The White Lies came on to my radar after catching their debut album ‘To Loose My Life’, released early last year – they also released a two track EP ‘Unfinished Business’ in 2008, with a short run of only 500 copies made. To Lose My Life is a well crafted album, with a vibe of 80s post punk; electronic overtones, bold vocals and distorted guitars – and while the band has been compared to The Killers, Franz Ferdinand and other indie-pop crusaders, there’s a darker feel to this. The vocals and lyrics aren’t as playful as bands like Franz Ferdinand, and it’s not as upbeat for the most part.

The fanbase growing behind this relatively obscure sound should lead the way for more daring takes on the tried indie-pop rock feel of the last decade; The White Lies have fast become one of my favourites of 2009, and if you’re up for a more powerful, moody alternative rock, this album is definitely worth a listen.

For fans of good-old-fashioned upbeat punk-rock, this is a fairly wholesome offering worth checking out.
